sports car alignment

Sports car alignment is measuring and adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they are set to the car manufacturer’s specifications. It’s an important maintenance area for the sports car. Getting sports car alignment right reduces tire wear and ensures the sports car drives true and straight while also steering and handling correctly.

On occasion, alignment angles of sports car alignment will be altered beyond the manufacturer’s normal specifications to obtain a specific handling characteristic, such as when setting up a car for track use.

As for sports car alignment, some cars of the older design only have limited adjustments that can be made, which are done at the front wheels. For vehicles of more modern design, there are considerable amounts of adjustments that can be done at both front and rear wheels.

Before checking and adjusting sports car alignment, an essential first step must be to ensure the suspension and steering components are not worn or damaged.

Otherwise, although the correct sports car alignment settings can be obtained when a car is static in the workshop, as soon as the vehicle is subjected to the forces of cornering, bumps, or traveling at speed, these forces will take up any slack in worn suspension/steering components, and cause the settings to change.

Another basic check of sports car alignment before commencing work is to ensure that tire pressures are correct and that the tires are in good condition and not excessively worn.

Also, depending on the car, it may be necessary to ensure the ride height is correct (as this affects camber and toe), which can involve putting weights in the car to replicate driver and passenger(s).
